Study Recommendations
bulletJoal Hill's final exam comes entirely from her lecture.  Take VERY good notes; especially write down any questions she asks in class.  You will definitely see these questions again on the final exam.  She submitted 150 questions (3 x 50 question exams) to the administrative offices.  The head of the department will administer one of these exams or take random questions for any of these exams.
bulletThe second semester class (2002/01) put together a very good note packet of Joal Hill's class.  Thank you 2nd semester!  This packet is available at the Salmonella copy center.

An attendance quiz is given daily.  Approximately 10% of the students will be chosen randomly daily to take an attendance quiz which will count 20% toward your grade in the class.  The quiz will cover that days lecture so you need to read ahead!  The material covered on the quiz is rather general so you may have to read as much of that days reading as you can.

Attendance is also taken the second hour ... this is a two-hour course.

Class Notes
bullet

Attendance is taken via a class-map system by one of the secretaries daily.

bullet

It will be very helpful to pay very close attention to the lectures in this class as much of the material on the exams comes directly from lectures ... and this is a difficult course to learn via textbook.

bullet

The first exam will cover calculations and is considered the most difficult exam ... be careful of this exam.  The remaining exams will focus on medications and categories ... you've got to stay on top of this material.

bullet

Advice: For the 1st partial - learn the calculations very, very well.  For the remaining exams - study the companion text series for this class.  Another excellent resource for this class is the Examination and Board Review Pharmacology by Katzung.  For toxicology KNOW THE NOTE PACKET backward and forward ... the exam questions are pulled verbatim out of the note packet.

This course is mandated by the Mexican government and involves being integrating your IPM skills in a clinical setting.  You will choose the community clinic you are interested in attending.  The order of selection of clinics is based on a lottery system...so choose several community clinics in case your favorite fills up.  You will be required to perform physical examinations, basic patient history taking, house-call follow-up visits, present basic research papers on medical conditions assigned to you by the director of the clinic you attend.  You will spend 1 week at a local community clinic.

Advice: DO NOT talk or play around in Tiger's class.  He expects class participation.  It seems that he practices the leadership principles identified in Sun Tzu's The Art of War.  Know BRS (Board Review Series: Pathology) as a minimum for the class.  Some pictures presented in class and lab will come directly from Robbins; others will come from Dr. Garcia's own collection.

bullet

Rubin vs. Robbins' Textbooks:  Rubin is good reading but is not entirely complete.  Robbins is complete, but is very in-depth reading.  You might get lost in the forest reading Robbins.  The important thing here is that the images you will see in the USMLE Step 1 will most likely come directly from Robbins ... or, will be very, very similar to the pictures you will see in Robbins!

bullet

Attendance quizzes are given to randomly selected students (or rows of students) every other day or so.

bullet

Observations: Dr. Garcia "Tiger" is one of the best pathologists in Mexico!  He continues to identify (diagnose) pathological samples that the National Pathology Center in Mexico City can't identify.  Take as much knowledge as you can from his class - he's the best!

bullet

4th semester PMC will last 2 weeks for 4 hours/day ... usually from 4pm till 8pm Monday through Friday.  However, there is also the option (in every semester) to attend a Red Cross clinic on weekends or whenever you coordinate that with the Red Cross clinic director.  The Red Cross clinics are a great way to get PMC out of the way during the weeknights.

bullet

Here is the best part: nothing will be turned in to ICB/UAG during your 4th semester PMC.  You will have to prepare two (2) historias and two (2) research paper topics.  These items will be turned in to the director of your PMC clinic for evaluation.  You will, however, be responsible for as many SOAPs as the clinic director asks.

bullet

I will work on preparing some study aids for PMC over the next few months and will post these as I complete them.  These study aids will also be useful during Propedeutics and at the Hospitals.
