Attendance is taken via a class-map system by
one of the secretaries daily.
|
 |
It will be very helpful to pay very close
attention to the lectures in this class as much of the material on the exams
comes directly from lectures ... and this is a difficult course to learn via
textbook.
|
 |
The first exam will cover calculations and is
considered the most difficult exam ... be careful of this exam. The
remaining exams will focus on medications and categories ... you've got to
stay on top of this material.
|
 |
Advice:
For the 1st partial - learn the calculations very, very well.
For the remaining exams - study the companion text series for this class.
Another excellent resource for this class is the Examination and Board
Review Pharmacology by Katzung. For toxicology KNOW THE NOTE
PACKET backward and forward ... the exam questions are pulled verbatim out
of the note packet.

: This is your patient's clinical history. Follow the guidelines of
your Historia Clinica form. |
 | Lista de Claves
: Only applies to 2nd and 3rd semester students. Place on same sheet
of paper as "Agrupación y Titilación".
This is a listing of the signs and symptoms the patient is presenting
all grouped together.
For example, the patient comes in with a sore throat and an ear ache.
Identify the signs and symptoms as presented below:
Lista de Claves:
a) odinofagia
b) tos con expectoración
c) dolor torácico
d) rinorrea hialina
e) faringe hiperemica
f)

Place on same sheet of paper as "Lista de Problemas". This is
a listing of the signs and symptoms the patient is presenting
categorized by disease.
For example, the patient comes in with a sore throat and an ear ache.
Identify the signs and symptoms as presented below:

 | Lista de
Problemas : Only applies to 3rd semester students. This is a
separate sheet of paper listing the CURRENT problems reported by the
patient which are not necessarily pertinent to the current reason for
coming to the clinic. For example, the patient may have come to the
clinic for a sprained ankle. One item on the "Lista de Problemas"
would be a sprained ankle; however, you will also include apparently
"unrelated" problems such as diabetes, hypertension, migraines or any
other illness/disease which the patient refers. |

Advice: DO NOT talk or play around in Tiger's class.
He expects class participation. It seems that he practices the
leadership principles identified in Sun Tzu's
The Art of War.
Know BRS (Board Review Series: Pathology) as a minimum for the class.
Some pictures presented in class and lab will come directly from Robbins;
others will come from Dr. Garcia's own collection.
|
 |
Rubin vs. Robbins'
Textbooks: Rubin is good reading but is not entirely complete.
Robbins is complete, but is very in-depth reading. You might get lost
in the forest reading Robbins. The important thing here is that the
images you will see in the USMLE Step 1 will most likely come directly from
Robbins ... or, will be very, very similar to the pictures you will see in
Robbins!
|
 |
Attendance quizzes are given to randomly
selected students (or rows of students) every other day or so.
|
 |
Observations:
Dr. Garcia "Tiger" is one of the best pathologists in Mexico! He
continues to identify (diagnose) pathological samples that the National
Pathology Center in Mexico City can't identify. Take as much knowledge
as you can from his class - he's the best!
|
 |
Tidbits:
Disfunctional Ca excess = kidney stones; carcinoid tumors
below the diaphragm will have their serotonin metabolized by the liver

4th semester PMC will
last 2 weeks for 4 hours/day ... usually from 4pm till 8pm Monday through
Friday. However, there is also the option (in every semester) to
attend a Red Cross clinic on weekends or whenever you coordinate that with
the Red Cross clinic director. The Red Cross clinics are a great way
to get PMC out of the way during the weeknights.
|
 |
Here is the best part:
nothing will be turned in to ICB/UAG during your 4th semester PMC. You
will have to prepare two (2) historias and two (2) research paper topics.
These items will be turned in to the director of your PMC clinic for
evaluation. You will, however, be responsible for as many SOAPs as the
clinic director asks.
|
 |
I will work on preparing
some study aids for PMC over the next few months and will post these as I
complete them. These study aids will also be useful during
Propedeutics and at the Hospitals.
